Meteorological devices containing numerous packages of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was compelled to shut down for hours when dozens of them floated into the country's airspace.
Air Travel Interruptions
The temporary shutdown led to 30 flight cancellations affecting 6,000 passengers, with officials warning that delays might continue throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Border security stated that 25 meteorological balloons were detected entering Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two of which ending up directly over the airport's airspace.
As many as 14 of the weather balloons sent during the weekend drifted across the metropolitan zone, which is the location of Lithuania's capital city and adjacent to the frontier with Belarus.

A minimum of 11 balloons containing eighteen thousand packages of black-market cigarettes have since been recovered, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to law enforcement authorities.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
Despite the disruption, officials emphasized that "Balloons with contraband - cigarettes from Belarus - are common occurrences in neighboring countries."
Since January, 544 balloons have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were noted during the prior year.
Neighboring Country Impact
At the same time, the border area of Poland, which also borders Belarus, has recorded more than numerous instances in which contraband was flown from its border nation utilizing the balloons.
Illegal Transport Methods
In response to questions about why smugglers utilize a technique that proves particularly vulnerable to weather conditions rather than easier to manage drones, authorities explained that "Atmospheric equipment are simple mechanisms used by contraband transporters - they are more economical than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Authorities continued that "The objective of our agencies is to capture the greatest possible quantities of contraband and to arrest masterminds and participants so that this activity become unprofitable and create minimal risk to civil aviation."
European Tensions
The recent incidents occur during an era marked by growing anxiety in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have created aviation problems across European nations.
Parallel situations in adjacent nations have led European authorities to speed up talks about enhancing aerial security throughout the continent.
