The Iconic Puzzle Game Couldn't Triumph at This Gaming Ceremony — Another Award Type Could Fix That

As any prominent prize-giving event nears, there’s always a clamor to include additional classifications to recognize underappreciated efforts and fill the passions of enthusiasts who have specialized interests.

Another commentator made the case advocating for terror-themed awards. That would be fantastic. The same goes for tabletop games, this being a passionate advocate's mission. However, I must insist if I try to elbow in front just as with other dedicated enthusiasts, I have a cast-iron argument backing this proposal is the most urgent and important of all. Here's the proposal: There should be a category for puzzle games.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Categorizing art by genre defies precise measurement; it remains highly personal, and inevitably spark debates concluding with vague boundaries. It's understandable that film award organizations don’t do it. However, it represents an essential concession in the world of gaming, that demonstrate such variety it's challenging to consider them as a single art form.

For the full spectrum of interactive entertainment excellence to receive acknowledgment, and to ensure all game types to compete fairly, genre categories are essential.

Current Gaming Award Categories

The major gaming awards offer these classifications covering Action, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Together, these award types effectively encompass many game types, making space possible for most games within them.

Not so for brain-teasing titles. No suitable classification appears to accommodate them. Think about these outstanding current releases, all very different: the architectural riddles in a particular game, intense tile-matching from another release, thought-provoking social scenarios from additional release. Where could they possibly go among existing types? Unfortunately, nowhere.

The Representation Problem

There are dozens excellent brain-teasers published annually lacking appropriate categories in entertainment awards, unless they happen to qualify for categories like Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, or the extremely competitive small studio competitions.

  • One classic puzzle game got overlooked completely during that awards season
  • A different innovative game missed out in 2019
  • A beloved organization game received no acknowledgment recently
  • Limited numbers of logic titles scraped into niche award types

Significance of Puzzle Games

Commonly they're modest productions, however the design in brain-teasers carries substantial weight. Well-known matching games rank among most engaged experiences globally maintaining this status for over a decade.

The iconic tile-matching title competes with famous sandbox experiences for the title of highest-selling title ever; it’s also in the running as greatest title ever. Puzzle games are foundational within interactive entertainment, while interacting across multiple categories.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Puzzle games wouldn’t have such difficulty. It would be easy to populate a field of five interesting, varied, worthy titles every year with ease — or rather, with difficulty, since numerous excellent so many good games out.

Restating the point, these represent titles lacking appropriate categories during prominent ceremonies. Logic title developers operate at the hard edge game development, developing some of essential manifestations of the video game form. Comparable to film action specialists, they warrant appreciation. Don't make them wait generations.
