2K Games has appointed Ben Brinkman from the creators of Apex Legends to direct the studio crew at 31st Union, which is currently crafting the anticipated third-person action-packed title known as this innovative game.
The new appointee takes on the leadership position at 31st Union following the departure of former leader the ex-Sledgehammer Games executive, who was reportedly let go due to the game's underwhelming unveiling last autumn.
On Wednesday, 2K president David Ismailer notified staff about this decision through an internal memo, which emphasized that playtesting had shown the requirement for a more defined direction.
The president stated that the team is now overhauling Project Ethos with a renewed focus, aiming to address community desires.
This announcement mirrors a comparable step taken by the publisher in August, when they hired an industry veteran from Blizzard to assist with the BioShock studio Cloud Chamber.
Here is the entire content from Ismailer's communication:
Team—
I know you all just finished your town hall - I trust you’re as enthusiastic as I am with the good news. Last time I sent you all a message, I expressed the following: “I believe in this crew. You all are some of the most driven and creative creators we have had the chance to collaborate with - and we’re eager for that collaboration to endure.”
With your dedication and versatility, particularly over the past twelve months, you continue to prove that.
The gamer responses from last fall’s the game demo was informative. It affirmed the appeal of a action-packed game but indicated we still had work to do. It revealed the requirement for a sharper identity.
It has been motivating to see how far you’ve progressed. You took the input to mind and revamped the title with a renewed vision - one that’s positioned to fulfill its ambition to our audience.
The belief in this project strengthens every day. To advance the incredible development you’ve made, It is a pleasure to announce the new hire as the incoming Studio Head of the team. Following several months of conversations, Ben officially joins us on next week.
His guidance and background in the PVP shooter genre is considerable, having devoted the last 15 years developing and overseeing some of the most popular franchises in gaming, for example the acclaimed shooter, and most recently, the battle royale hit.
Let’s together in receiving Ben in the coming days. We are all looking forward to persist witnessing the progress of Project ETHOS in the weeks to follow.
David
Brinkman presently holds the position of senior developer and production lead at Respawn Entertainment for Apex Legends. He earlier worked at Treyarch and Activision in multiple production roles on the Call of Duty games, and, prior to that, had assignments at 2K and Electronic Arts.
Project Ethos was unveiled in last year together with a public demo. Initially, 31st Union portrayed the title as a "no-cost, 3rd-person roguelike hero shooter and an innovative step forward on the genre."
"Create your ideal gameplay session—or face defeat—in this engaging over-the-shoulder adventure! Build your hero in real-time to suit your personal playstyle," the game's pitch explains. "Challenge the competition with new abilities, risks, and obstacles that evolve every session. Do you leave securely with your hard-earned loot? Alternatively go big, gamble everything, and trust your group can achieve the highest spot? The choice is yours."
Project Ethos has not yet received an announced release date or consoles, but enthusiasts can expect more updates as production advances.
